In short

  • What it is: a choice-driven college visual novel by Dr PinkCake, sold season by season.
  • Who it's for: players who prefer story and branching choices over sandbox grinding.
  • Price: not free; Season 1 is $13.99 on Steam, and all three seasons come to $53.97 (regular prices, September 2026).
  • Status: Seasons 1-3 (Episodes 1-12 plus an Interlude) are out; Season 4 will end the story.
  • Big pro / big con: choices carry across seasons through save imports, but the price adds up and gaps between episodes are long.

What is Being a DIK?

It is an episodic adult visual novel about a college freshman's first semester, told across seasons that you buy one at a time. Its Steam page calls it "a choice-driven adult Visual Novel focusing on the fun parts of college life", and the reviews back it up: Season 1 sits at Overwhelmingly Positive from 11,919 Steam reviews as of September 2026.

Who makes it

It comes from Dr PinkCake, the developer who also made the finished visual novel Acting Lessons. You can see both projects on our Dr PinkCake developer page. The series first launched on Steam on February 13, 2020, with Patreon episodes coming out earlier than that.

If you are new to the genre, our guide to adult visual novels explains how this style of game differs from sandboxes and dating sims.

Gameplay

Choices and personality

Most of the game is reading and choosing. Dialogue and behavior choices shape the protagonist's personality and how each character reacts to him. The Steam page puts the central question plainly: play as "a nice, caring and romantic guy or as someone more straightforward and daring".

Characters have different values and respond to those choices differently, which is what drives the romance routes.

Interactive extras

The reading is broken up by optional interactive parts:

  • Mini-games. Optional challenges scattered through the episodes.
  • Free-roam events. Short sections where you explore the current location.
  • Boosters, cheats and skills. Bought in-game to make the mini-games easier.
  • Hidden items. Finding them unlocks bonus artwork.

Save carry-over between seasons

The part that matters most long-term is save carry-over. Your choices follow you from season to season through save imports. Season 3's Steam page says it "utilizes save files made at the end of episode 8" and that its story is "meticulously tailored to your past Seasons 1 and 2 choices".

Season 3 also adds an Interlude, "Riding the Waves", where you play as Zoey and see part of the story before the protagonist arrives at college.

Story

The setup

The protagonist comes from a low-income family and leaves his widowed father behind to attend Burgmeister & Royce college. Once there, he is persuaded to join Delta Iota Kappa, an up-and-coming fraternity.

The seasons follow freshman life, rival fraternities, friendships and romances, and the knock-on effects of what you decided earlier. All characters are adults.

Tone and content warnings

The tone is comedy first, but not only comedy. The Steam content notice warns that the story covers drugs, violence and darker real-life themes, and says it is "not intended for players being in a dark period of their lives." The same notice states that all sexual acts in the game are consensual.

Main features

  • Branching story with save carry-over. Works across all three released seasons.
  • Optional 4K mode. Available for Season 3, free but downloaded separately, needing 80 GB of extra disk space.
  • Steam extras. Achievements and Steam Cloud on all three seasons.

Content per season

SeasonContent (per Steam)Playtime (Steam estimate)
Season 1361 animated scenes, over 8,000 images8-12 hours
Season 2Close to 14,000 static images, more than 900 animated scenes, 129 new songs, 54 achievements12-16 hours for one playthrough
Season 3Over 25,000 images and 1,500 animations (bigger than Seasons 1 and 2 combined)Not listed

Visual style

The game uses 3D rendered stills and animations, the standard look for Patreon-era visual novels. What sets it apart is volume and consistency: each season has shipped more images and animations than the last.

The Being a DIK 4K mode is an optional free download for Season 3 that renders most animations at 4K and 60 fps, per its store page. That mode is demanding. Steam asks for "a decent CPU and GPU" on top of the extra 80 GB.

Platforms and how to get it

You can buy it in two official stores:

  • Steam. On the Being a DIK Steam listing, Season 1 is the base game and Seasons 2 and 3 are paid DLC. Being a DIK Season 3 requires both Season 1 and the Season 2 DLC.
  • GOG. The Being a DIK GOG releases give each season its own store page (Season 1, Season 2, Season 3), and GOG also sells a bundle of Seasons 1-3 with Acting Lessons.
  • Patreon. New episodes are released first to supporters on Dr PinkCake's Patreon.

Platform support

LinuxYes, on Steam for every season
macOSNo build on Steam
Mac or Android via PatreonCould not be confirmed on a primary source

If you are on a Mac, check our Mac guide for adult games before buying anything. It is one of the Steam releases we point newcomers to in our adult games on Steam list.

How much does Being a DIK cost?

It is not free on Steam or GOG. Each season is sold separately. At regular Steam prices (September 2026):

ItemRegular Steam price
Season 1 (base game)$13.99
Season 2 DLC$19.99
Season 3 DLC$19.99
All three seasons$53.97

Season 4 will be sold separately as well, so the total will go up. Patreon supporters pay monthly and get new episodes before the store release. We explain the trade-offs of that model in our guide to adult game Patreon releases.

Is it safe to download?

We don't test files and can't promise any download is free of malware. The safest route is buying through Steam or GOG, which handle the download and updates for you. Patreon posts from Dr PinkCake are the other official source.

Avoid "free full version" sites and mirror uploads: they are not official, and they also break the save chain that makes the series work, since you need clean saves from each season for the next one.

Latest version and updates

  • Latest release. As of September 2026, the Being a DIK latest version is Episode 12 (v0.12.1), the Season 3 finale. Per the Patreon post title and fan-maintained records, it reached Patreon in August 2026.
  • Steam. The Season 3 DLC launched on Steam on September 1, 2026.
  • Next. Season 4 (Episode 13 onward) is in development. The Season 3 Steam page says Season 4 "will be the final season that concludes the story."

Worth knowing

Community sentiment often mentions long gaps between episodes. Season 3's Steam reviews are also noticeably lower than Season 1's, though the Season 3 sample is still small and recent:

Final verdict

This is the benchmark for the choice-heavy college visual novel. The writing mixes comedy and drama well, the save chain makes your decisions feel like they count, and each season ships a lot of content. The price adds up and the waits are long, but with Season 4 announced as the ending, there is finally a finish line in sight.
