In short

  • What it is: a sandbox harem game in a house pulled into a dimensional rift, with a cast of women from different realms.
  • Who it's for: players who like large, regularly updated sandbox games and fantasy or monster-girl themes.
  • Price: free public builds on itch.io; newer builds through the Premium itch.io version or Patreon.
  • Platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, per the itch.io page.
  • Big pro / big con: a huge amount of content for free, but downloads are around 11 GB and the free build runs a couple of versions behind.

What kind of game is it?

It is an adult sandbox visual novel. The developer describes it as "a sandbox harem game with monthly updates" that is "densely packed and easy to navigate". You move around the house and other locations, trigger story events and build relationships with each character in turn.

It is also one of the better-rated games in its niche. The itch.io page shows 4.7 out of 5 from 2,864 ratings as of September 2026. The game is made in Ren'Py, the most common engine for this kind of visual novel.

Gameplay

The loop is the standard sandbox one: pick a location and time, see which events are available, and push each character's storyline forward. What stands out is the scale. The developer lists more than 200 story events, over 20,000 still renders and over 300 animations.

How progress is tracked

  • Story events. Each character has main, side and personal storylines made of individual events.
  • Relationship levels. Events are grouped into levels per character. Finishing a level raises a cap on how far that relationship can go.
  • Event tracking. The game shows where and when an event happens (for example "Pool, afternoon") and how many of its parts you have seen.
  • Gallery. Unlocked scenes are collected in a scene gallery.

What players say

A common point in community feedback is that sandbox navigation can make progress hard to track, especially when you are not sure which quest needs finishing next. Recent itch.io comments also include reports of relationship values getting stuck; the developer team replied that those bugs are fixed in version 0.8.14r2, which at the time of writing is available in the Premium edition but not yet in the free build.

Story

You are thrown into a dimensional rift and end up in what looks like your parents' house, now shared with a succubus. She is only the first arrival. More women from different realms turn up, each with her own storyline and personality.

The premise is light, and it is there to justify a fantasy cast under one roof rather than to carry a dramatic plot. That is not a criticism: the house-as-hub design makes the sandbox easy to understand, and the realm-hopping gives each character a distinct flavor. All characters are adults.

Content warnings

The game contains explicit 3D-rendered sexual content and animations, with harem and fantasy or monster-girl themes. The itch.io tags mark it as adult and NSFW. Some dream sequences include voiced audio, according to the developer team; the base game otherwise uses music only.

The developer team has said more localization is not a priority right now, and that any future translations would be machine translated.

Visual style

Everything is 3D rendered, with a colorful, polished look and a heavy focus on animation. The interface uses a clean purple theme with clear tabs for relationship levels and events, which helps in a game this large. The sheer number of renders is the main draw, and it is also why the downloads are so big.

Platforms and how to get it

The official itch.io page is the main source. As of September 30, 2026, it offers these free files:

FileSize
0.8.12 PC (free)11 GB
0.8.12 Mac (free)11 GB
0.8.12 Android pack (free)4 GB
Android launcher41 MB

Mac and Android

  • Mac: there is a dedicated A House in the Rift Mac download on itch.io. Our Mac guide for adult games covers the usual security prompts.
  • Android: you install the small launcher and add the separate data pack. To update, the developer team says to place the new .rpa file in the game folder next to the current one, delete the old .rpa and launch; saves carry over.

AHITR Premium and Patreon

Two paid routes get you newer builds:

  • Premium on itch.io. A separate paid edition on ZanithOne's itch.io, which runs ahead of the free build. We did not verify its price.
  • AHITR Patreon early access. The itch.io page says pledging $5 or more on Patreon gets new content early.

How this model works in general is explained in our guide to Patreon releases for adult games.

Is A House in the Rift free?

Yes, the public builds are free on itch.io for every listed platform. The catch is timing: the free version lags behind the paid ones. As of September 30, 2026 the free build is 0.8.12, while Premium has 0.8.14 and Patreon early access has 0.8.15. It is one of the bigger entries in our itch.io adult games list.

Is it safe to download?

Download only from the official itch.io page, the Premium page on ZanithOne's itch.io, or the developer's Patreon. Re-upload sites that promise "the latest version free" are not official. Because the files are so large, an interrupted itch.io download is a common problem; the developer team suggests trying another browser if it fails. Our guide to itch.io adult game safety has more.

FAQ

Is there an A House in the Rift Android version?

Yes. The itch.io page offers a free Android pack (4 GB) and a separate launcher (41 MB).

How do I update on Android without losing saves?

Per the developer team: put the new .rpa file in the game folder where the current one is, delete the old .rpa and launch the game. Saves carry over.

What is the difference between the free and Premium versions?

Premium is a paid itch.io edition that gets new versions earlier. As of September 30, 2026, Premium is on 0.8.14 and the free build on 0.8.12.

Is the game finished?

No. It is in development with monthly updates, and the developer has not announced how or when it will be completed.

How big is the download?

About 11 GB for the PC or Mac build, and about 4 GB plus a 41 MB launcher on Android.

Is it worth playing?

If you like big sandbox games with fantasy casts, yes: the free build alone is a lot of content, and ratings on itch.io are high. If you dislike tracking quests across a sandbox or have limited storage, it will be a harder sell.

Final verdict

This is one of the most generous free sandbox games around: thousands of renders, hundreds of animations and native builds for four platforms. It asks for patience with big downloads, a free build that trails the paid ones and a sandbox that is easy to lose your place in. If that trade works for you, start with the free version, play through a few character routes, and only then decide whether Premium or Patreon early access is worth paying for. Most players will find the free build keeps them busy for a long time. For similar sandbox picks see our Harem Hotel review and the Summertime Saga review, or browse the game catalog.
