In short

  • What it is: a pixel-art dating sim set in an explorable cyberpunk city, with investigations, dress-up and apartment decorating.
  • Who it's for: adults who want queer, trans-positive writing and do not mind very explicit, niche content.
  • Price: $16.99 on Steam, and $16.99 minimum on itch.io (regular price, September 2026).
  • Status and platforms: completed; full release November 4, 2024, on Windows, Mac and Linux.
  • Big pro / big con: a warm, distinctive voice and a real open world, but the content focus is explicit enough to narrow its audience sharply.

What is Hardcoded?

Hardcoded is made by Ghosthug Games (Steam spells it "Ghost Hug Games"), which also runs a Patreon for the game. The full release came out on November 4, 2024, and the itch.io page lists the game as released.

You play a thinking, learning android who has escaped her owners and is hiding in Pira City. She finds a home, joins a queer private detective gang and starts digging into the city's secrets. The developer describes the Hardcoded game as being, in many ways, about the trans experience of transition: the alienation, and the hope.

The Steam review summary is "Very Positive" across 348 reviews, a small but enthusiastic base. One naming note: an unrelated platformer with a similar name is also listed on Steam, so check the developer before you buy.

Gameplay

Hardcoded is open-world in a compact, 2D sense: you walk the streets of Pira City, enter buildings, meet people and pick what to do next.

What you do

  • Explore and investigate. The detective gang gives you cases that take you across the city and into its seedier corners.
  • Make friends. Characters open up as you spend time with them, and relationships can become physical at any stage.
  • Earn and spend. You make money in your downtime, then spend it on clothes and furniture.
  • Dress up. Hundreds of outfit pieces are spread across vendors, with more hidden around the city.
  • Decorate. Furniture you find or buy goes into your apartment, which becomes the character's safe space.

No meter to grind

The most interesting design choice is what is missing. Most dating sims make you grind an affection meter to unlock scenes. Hardcoded deliberately does not: the store page says intimacy is part of how relationships grow, not a prize at the end. That gives it a looser, more conversational rhythm.

Hardcoded duo paths

Spend time with more than one character and their stories can start to overlap. These "duo paths" unlock scenes about the dynamic between two characters, which gives exploration a reason beyond completing single routes.

Story and tone

The tone is an unusual mix. The developer calls it "wholesome and positive" and, in the same breath, proudly vulgar. The humour is irreverent and the city is full of satire, from a cheerful mascot for a long-dead bottling plant to a megacorporation that promises it "cares".

All characters are adults. Steam's content notes list sex as a major theme, with graphic sexual content including BDSM, plus intoxication, self-harm themes and non-sexual violence. We keep this review non-explicit, but take those notes at face value: this is not a game with a light touch on content.

Visual style

Hardcoded uses hand-drawn pixel art. Street scenes are moody and neon-lit, character portraits are expressive and diverse in body types, and the interface uses chunky retro screens, such as the in-game email client.

It is a small download (300 MB on Steam) and should run on almost anything.

Platforms and how to get it

Both Steam and itch.io list Windows, Mac and Linux, so both the Hardcoded Linux and Mac builds are official. The game is English only.

  • Steam: $16.99. Steam carries the "Adult Only Sexual Content" descriptor and states the game is for adults only.
  • itch.io: the Hardcoded itch.io page asks $16.99 minimum and is run by the developer's account (yoplatz). Our Steam vs itch.io comparison explains the practical differences.
  • Patreon: the Hardcoded Patreon is where the team announced the full release.
  • Official website: the hardcoded.online domain showed a domain-sale page when we checked, so we do not link it. Use the stores above.

Since then the developer has posted small patches on Steam, from 1.02 in November 2024 to 1.09 on July 14, 2025, the latest we could confirm. They fixed spelling, loading and audio, added an OpenGL option on Windows and, in 1.08, a new mini-scene in one of the city's alleyways.

Final verdict

Hardcoded has something most adult games lack: a point of view. The open city, the detective work, the dress-up and the lack of meter-grinding make it feel like a place rather than a scene gallery, and the writing is warm and funny under the vulgarity. The content is very explicit and niche, so know what you are buying. If that fits, it is one of the more original games in our dating sim guide, and you can find more in our reviews catalog.
