Innocent Witches Review

Innocent Witches is a point-and-click adult adventure by Sad Crab Company, a comedic parody of the Harry Potter setting with visual novel scenes and old-school puzzles. It is free to play: the public build is on the official site and itch.io for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android, plus a browser version, while supporters get newer builds first. It is still in development.

In short

  • What it is: a hand-drawn, humorous adult point-and-click game in the style of classic adventures, with inventory puzzles, quests and visual novel scenes.
  • Who it's for: players who miss old-school adventure puzzles and enjoy parody humor.
  • Price: free public builds; supporter builds via Patreon, SubscribeStar or Boosty, or $10+ on itch.io.
  • Platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and an official browser version. Not on Steam.
  • Big pro / big con: real puzzle design and a distinctive 2D art style, but it has been in development for years and the public build trails the supporter one.

What is Innocent Witches?

It is an adult adventure game built in Ren'Py that mixes three things: point-and-click exploration, inventory puzzles and quests, and visual novel story scenes. The developer's pitch is nostalgic: "Perhaps you remember the days when puzzles were fun and games were meant to be interesting?" The design takes its cues from classic adventures like Monkey Island.

The setting is a parody. The itch.io page calls it "a free, humorous rendition of the story of the boy who lived", with familiar places and characters given a comedic, adult twist. All characters are presented as adults.

Players rate it well: 4.4 out of 5 from 2,771 ratings on itch.io as of September 2026. The developer, Sad Crab Company, reports more than 3,500 patrons on its official site, which makes the Innocent Witches game one of the larger crowdfunded adult projects.

Gameplay

Most of the time you are walking between locations, clicking on objects and people, picking things up and working out where they go. Story beats then play out as visual novel scenes.

The main parts

  • Point-and-click exploration. Hand-drawn rooms full of clickable objects, in the classic adventure layout.
  • Inventory puzzles and quests. Items and clues unlock progress; this is the core of the game.
  • Mini-games. The developer says the game is "not just a visual novel" and adds mini-games for variety.
  • Sandbox mode. Some chapters let you move freely between locations and advance character storylines in any order. Version 0.11B added a sandbox mode for Act 2 Chapter 2.

Puzzles and the official wiki

The puzzles are the best and the most divisive part. A common view among players is that some solutions are obscure without help, which is true to the classic adventure games it imitates. For an Innocent Witches walkthrough, use the developer's official wiki, linked from the site and itch.io page, which covers quest solutions.

Controls and accessibility

The itch.io page lists keyboard and mouse, Xbox and PlayStation controllers and other gamepads, and touchscreen input. Accessibility options listed are subtitles and an interactive tutorial.

Story

You play Marcus Redblack, son of Tom Riddle, whose actions have made the whole wizarding world shudder. The story shows how it began. It opens in Azkaban and follows his path "from an unknown physician to Dark Lord", starting with the offer of the Headmaster's post at Hogwarts.

The tone is comedy first. The developer describes it as "a bit brighter, more lustrous, and a whole lot more lustful" than the source, and the humor comes from turning well-known locations and situations upside down.

Content warnings

It is strictly 18+, with explicit sexual content. The themes include corruption, BDSM, exhibitionism and humiliation, in a parody school setting. All characters are presented as adults. If any of those themes are a dealbreaker, this is not the game for you.

Visual style

This is the game's calling card. Unlike most adult games, which use 3D renders, it is drawn by hand in a detailed 2D cartoon style, closer to a classic adventure game than to a visual novel. Rooms are dense with props and small jokes, which suits the click-on-everything design. The official soundtrack is available separately on itch.io.

Play Innocent Witches online

The official site links a "Play Online" browser build, currently 0.11.5-beta-fix1, so a little behind the downloadable public version. The itch.io page recommends it for Android users who have performance problems with the app.

Mac and Android

  • Mac: itch.io lists macOS. Our guide to playing adult games on a Mac covers unsigned-app prompts.
  • Android: the Innocent Witches Android build is listed on itch.io; if it runs poorly, the developer suggests the browser version instead.

Is it on Steam?

No. In a reply on the itch.io page, the developer said a Steam release is planned but "not in near future", and that it would require remaking the art and names. As a parody of a third-party series, it is distributed only through the developer's own channels for now.

Is Innocent Witches free?

Yes. The public build is free on the official site and on itch.io, and the itch.io page asks you to treat any purchase as a tip. The official site is blunt: if someone offers the free version for a fee, "it's a scam". Paying gets you the newer supporter build earlier, either through the Innocent Witches Patreon, SubscribeStar or Boosty, or by paying $10 or more on itch.io. It features in our list of free adult games worth playing.

Is it safe to download?

Use only the official site, the Innocent Witches itch.io page and the developer's support pages. Anything else, including paid "full versions" on third-party sites, is unofficial by the developer's own statement. The official browser build is also a way to try the game without installing anything. For general precautions see our guide to safe downloads from itch.io.

Latest version and updates

ChannelVersion (September 30, 2026)
Public (free)0.11.6-beta-fix4
Supporters0.12.1-beta-fix4
Browser0.11.5-beta-fix1

So the Innocent Witches latest version depends on the channel. The story is in Act 2. In the itch.io comments the developer mentioned working on 0.12.2B and 0.13A in parallel, with a problem in save transfer causing delays. Players have noted that some older saves do not carry into the Act 2 builds, so expect to start fresh at times. The game is not finished, and no end date has been announced. How supporter-first releases work in general is covered in our explainer on Patreon releases.

Final verdict

This is one of the few adult games that is a real adventure game first: hand-drawn rooms, inventory puzzles and a sense of humor. It is also a long-running work in progress, with a public build that trails the supporter one and saves that do not always survive big updates. Since it is free, the browser version is the easy way to see if the style clicks.
