Koikatsu Party Review: Character Creator, DLC and Studio Status

What is Koikatsu Party?

It is developed and published by ILLUSION, the Japanese studio behind a long line of 3D adult games. It came out on Steam on June 10, 2019 as the English-language edition of Koikatsu, and the store pitches it bluntly as an anime character maker with romantic and sexual options.

The heart of Koikatsu is the editor. Everything else, including the interaction scenes, exists to give your creations something to do. Steam users rate it "Very Positive" across 5,722 reviews.

The store states that all characters are over 18 and that the game is for adults only.

Gameplay

There is no campaign to speak of. You open the editor, build a character, save her card and then try her out in the interaction mode.

The Koikatsu Party character creator

More than 300 settings. Face shape, eyes, ears, jaw, make-up and body proportions all have their own sliders, and you can type exact values.
Sectioned hair. Front, side, back and extension pieces are chosen and coloured separately, so two characters rarely end up looking alike.
Colour and shading. Skin colour, outline colour and shadow options let you push the look from standard anime to something stranger.
Outfits and accessories. Many clothing slots and accessory slots with free positioning, rotation and size.
Sharing. An in-game uploader lets you share characters with other players, which ILLUSION promoted in its 2019 Steam news.

Personality and interaction

30 personality archetypes. Each character gets one, such as the store's examples of tsundere or tomboy, and it changes how she talks and reacts.
Sensuality settings. You also set her tastes and experience, which change her reactions in the adult scenes.
Mouse-driven scenes. The interaction mode is controlled with simple mouse input rather than menus.

Our take: if building a character is fun for you, this can absorb dozens of hours. If you need goals and progression, it runs out of reasons to play quickly.

Koikatsu Party story mode

Wikipedia reports that the English release left out the story and school mode of the Japanese version. The Steam store page does not say either way, so treat it as reported rather than confirmed. What the store does make clear is that the Japanese expansions do not work with this edition.

Visual style

ILLUSION built Koikatsu around cel-style anime shaders, and it shows: characters look like 3D versions of anime illustrations, with clean outlines and flat, bright shading. The stock backgrounds (streets, cafes, parks) are pleasant but plain; the characters are the point.

On content: Steam carries the "Adult Only Sexual Content" descriptor and notes nudity and sexual content. We keep this review non-explicit. Voice acting is Japanese, and the store itself notes that subtitles are not available during the adult scenes.

Platforms and how to get it

The game is sold on Steam only, for Windows. There is no Koikatsu Party Mac or Linux build, and we found no official website for the game, so the Steam page is the reference.

What the Koikatsu Party Steam build contains

The adult content is included. No patch or paid unlock is needed; the store describes the sexual options directly.
Languages: English, plus Simplified and Traditional Chinese, which were added in September 2019.
Not included: the Japanese-market expansions, which the store says are incompatible.

Is Koikatsu safe to download?

Buy it on Steam, which is the only official English store we found. ILLUSION's closure notice says customers who have already bought the game can keep playing, and the Steam page was still selling it when we checked. Latest update and studio status

The last Koikatsu Party update in ILLUSION's Steam news is a small character-creation adjustment from April 2021, followed by the After Party release in May 2021. Nothing new has shipped since.

As reported by Wikipedia and QooApp, ILLUSION announced on July 14, 2023 that it would end its activities, and it stopped development and sales of its products on August 18, 2023. A "Notice of Termination of Activities" post also appears in the game's Steam news. In practice, treat the game as final: no patches, no support and no new content.

Final verdict

Koikatsu is a superb character creator attached to a thin game. If sculpting faces, hair and outfits for hours sounds fun, few titles on Steam go this deep, and the adult content is included as sold. Against that: a high price, no subtitles in the adult scenes and no developer to fix anything.
